Q: Today, Japan started the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, what do you think? What are the targeted arrangements for China to monitor the marine radiation environment?

Answer:The Japanese government forcibly started the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the sea, putting self-interest above the long-term well-being of all mankind, which is extremely selfish and irresponsible. We urge Japan to listen to the voice of the international community, effectively dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a scientific, safe and transparent manner, and accept strict international supervision.

The Ministry attaches great importance to the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan. In 2021 and 2022, we successively organized and carried out the monitoring of the marine radiation environment in the sea areas under China's jurisdiction, and found out the background of the marine radiation environment in the relevant sea areas. The monitoring results show that there is no abnormality in the activity concentration of artificial radionuclides in seawater and marine organisms in the sea areas under my country's jurisdiction, and the overall concentration is within the range of fluctuations over the years.

At present, according to the idea of monitoring key areas, covering sea areas under jurisdiction and mastering key channels, our Ministry is organizing and carrying out the monitoring of marine radiation environment in sea areas under our jurisdiction in 2023. In the future, our Ministry will continue to strengthen relevant monitoring work, timely track and judge the possible impact of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge on our marine radiation environment, and effectively safeguard our national interests and people's health.
